Double World

I would like to share with you below a poem that I wrote years ago about a fictitious individual who was found dead. This poem did not previously see the light of day.

Double World

Though the world is disharmony,
Inner self is in harmony
Electric impulses in brain-like music diffuses out,
Mingles with waiting notes
To form an everlasting sonata.

Today, distorted music encroaches me
Fire from the abyss of the earth,
Enters my soul to form enveloping sadness,
All connections, disconnected from the making of a syncopation
As time passes, minims and crotchets, wither away.

The intertwining and dancing of notes
Help to create,
Make me a whole being
Ready to give out
Intense feelings of peacefulness,
Surge with every oxygen molecule
That stick to a haem group with great fervor.
Leaving an intensified me,
With fire and vigour that never dims,
Even after the mechanisms fail.

Numbskulls with lack of nutrition
Get hyperactive,
Fight each other,
Leaving me to live with a hammer head.
My perceptions are distorted,
Cannot focus, not even on one note,
But jumbled up notes dance haphazardly
Leaving images of mutilated wholes.

The perfect harmony of yesterday
Turns into disharmony,
But different from the material world
Notes from the environment
Do not find their active sites,
Not even if enzymes are added
To the bloodstream.

Mind and soul would never meet in conditions such as mine.

Micallef, J. (1990/2013). Double World.

FARAXA’s Stories My Parents Told Me in the news

Stories My Parents Told Me: Tales of Growing Up in Wartime Malta, the ever-popular, recently published, book written by Maltese-Australian author and former school principal Rupert C. Grech was featured in today’s issue of the Lithgow Mercury newspaper, Australia. The book consists of a collection of seven short stories based on actual events during World War II on the Mediterranean island nation of Malta.

The stories describe a difficult time for children and their families where survival was paramount and family ties were what sustained them. These stories are interspersed with snippets of history, factual details and descriptions which establish a setting for tales which are, at times, emotionally moving and, at other times, bring a smile to your face. These stories also describe a culture of a time past for a deeply religious and frugal people.

At less than 7.50 EUR and free shipping worldwide, Stories My Parents Told Me is an excellent paperback to give as a gift for the holidays, since it appeals to both young and older readers alike. The book is also available in Kindle and Epub editions.

FARAXA’s German-Maltese Glossary featured in Australia

The Glossarju: Germaniz-Malti/Malti-Germaniz by R. Stanyer, A. Aquilina, D. es L. (ed.) and A. Scalpello has been featured in the June 2013 edition of the newsletter of the Maltese Literature Group in Victoria, Australia.

The Glossary is another indispensable tool for teachers, student-teachers, students of the German language and parents who would like to follow their children’s progress and/or visit a German-speaking country. It is the first of its kind in the history of the teaching of German in Malta and is aimed specifically for the needs of the Maltese public, with each entry exploited to the full through its use in a complete sentence, rather than limited to its equivalent in the target language.

This approach is meant to solve individual problems of expression while respecting both Maltese and German cultural contexts. The book is user friendly for translating from German into Maltese and vice-versa with two appendices, one with a localized key for the pronunciation of German sounds vis-à-vis the letters of the alphabet and another with cardinal and ordinal numbers in both languages presented in parallel. Glossarju: Germaniz-Malti/Malti-Germaniz is also precise and scientifically compiled. Glossarju is available in paperback edition.
