Synopsis

Raise the Curtain, edited by Barbara Day, is a collection of plays, most of which were submitted as entries to the Gozo Live play writing competition. It is written by Gozitans or people who have experienced strong connections with the island. Through dramatising legends, history, humour and tragedy, this anthology offers a glimpse into human nature, observations and imaginings, while Gozo provides the backdrop for the plays. The playing out of family dynamics, village culture interpersed with the expat’s presence, reminiscing over the story of Ulysses and Calypso, noises in the night, speculations about conversations and the throwback to historical periods make this book an excellent souvenir of Gozo and will appeal to anyone interested in theatre.

Gozo Live is a society for writers of all ages. It works in all the schools of Gozo running writing competitions and participations which are enthusiastically supported by school students, their teachers and their parents. Play performances are held annually and attract large, enthusiastic audiences.
